Pencil’s Ink is a minority-owned afterschool academy founded and operated by a recently retired New York City public school teacher with over 25 years of experience in education. Our mission is to provide high-quality, culturally responsive academic enrichment for students in Grades 2–5, with a focus on literacy, math, and real-world project-based learning. We are committed to equity, creativity, and excellence, offering a unique curriculum that integrates original fiction and nonfiction texts, Common Core-aligned instruction, and hands-on career exploration through monthly themed units. Pencil’s Ink is designed to support schools, engage students, and empower communities by blending academic rigor with joyful learning experiences.

Mission Mastery Curriculum

Mission Mastery Curriculum –
An After-School Curriculum for Career Exploration and Academic Excellence

Mission Mastery is an innovative, theme-based after-school curriculum designed to empower elementary students in Grades 2–5 through academic enrichment and real-world career exploration. Developed by educators for educators, Mission Mastery blends rigorous instruction with hands-on project-based learning (PBL), equipping students with the skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Each month centers around a powerful theme—such as medicine, arts, technology, or law—framed by the guiding question: “Think like a…” (e.g., a doctor, a director, an engineer, a CEO). Students engage in a 4-week cycle that includes:

Fiction & nonfiction literacy lessons tied to Common Core ELA and writing standards
Math lessons aligned to grade-level domains and theme-based applications
Project-Based Learning challenges that build research, collaboration, and presentation skills

Career awareness activities that introduce students to diverse roles and pathways
Social-emotional learning connections woven into texts and discussions

Across all grades, lessons are fully scripted and include original texts, vocabulary instruction, comprehension strategies, writing tasks, and custom anchor tools. Each theme culminates in a student-led final presentation or product showcase, giving learners the opportunity to share their work with families and peers.

Mission Mastery is designed for flexibility and impact. It can be delivered 3–5 days per week in afterschool settings and supports mixed-age grouping, academic remediation, and enrichment simultaneously. With 8 career-connected themes per year, the program helps students see themselves not just as learners—but as future leaders, creators, and changemakers.
